Hotel amenity fee: what it is and which hotels charge it

An amenity fee is a mandatory charge a hotel adds for every night of a stay, named after the things it is said to pay for. Of the 494 hotels in our data whose own website said either way, 117 call their fee an amenity fee, in 25 cities: from $15.00 to $69.00 a night (median $35.00), before tax. The items they list most often are Wi-Fi or internet, fitness center or gym and coffee or tea.

Read on the hotels’ own websites through 20 September 2026. A hotel counts when its own name for the fee has “amenity” or “amenities” in it: 23.68% of the 494 hotels whose page said either way. Hotels we could not confirm are in no figure; a page we could not read has told us nothing.

What is an amenity fee?

It is the kind of charge a resort fee is: an amount per night that the hotel adds to the bill whether or not you use anything it is said to pay for, and that you cannot decline. The name points at the items rather than the place, and a long list of small items reads as value whichever of them you use. It is part of the price of the room.

The hotels write the name 23 ways: “Amenity fee” (30), “Destination Amenity Fee” (19), “Guest Amenities Fee” (16), “Daily amenity fee” (15), “Guest Amenity Fee” (9), and 18 others. Some names carry another of the words as well: “resort” in 11, “destination” in 21 and “urban” in 5. The hotel used both, so it is counted under both.

Resort fee, destination fee, facility fee and amenity fee are four names for one kind of charge; destination fee, facility fee, resort fee is about the names, and destination fee lists the hotels using that one.

What does a hotel amenity fee include?

Counted once per hotel, out of the 107 of 117 hotels that say what their amenity fee pays for. A hotel that lists nothing has not said its fee pays for nothing, and an item on the list is not a reason to pay it: the fee is the same whether or not you use any of it.

How much is an amenity fee?

From $15.00 to $69.00 a night (median $35.00), before tax, across the 117 hotels. 86 say tax is added on top, 2 say nothing is added on top and 29 do not say.
