A state is ranked only once 8 hotels in it state a fee. The rest are listed below the table without a median, because a median is a claim about a distribution and a handful of hotels is not one.
What a state figure here actually is
It is the hotels we have read in that state’s cities, and nothing wider. 9 of the 15 ranked states are a single city — Hawaii is Honolulu, Illinois is Chicago — and the table names the cities behind every row. A figure like that is useful for “is this normal where I am going”. It is not a survey of the state, and we do not present it as one.
The share that charge is out of the hotels whose own site answered — stated a fee or stated it charges none. Hotels we could not confirm are in no percentage on this page. Counting them as “no fee” would turn every unread hotel into reassurance.

Questions people ask
- Which state has the highest resort fees?
- Of the states we can rank, Nevada: a median of $45.50 a night across 32 hotels that state one in Las Vegas, Reno. That is the median we measured, not a national ranking — states with no hotels in this dataset are simply absent.
- Are resort fees banned in any state?
- No state in this dataset bans them. What some places require is disclosure: a rule on how a price must be SHOWN is not a rule against charging it, and hotels in those places still state fees. New York City’s rule is the clearest example and has its own page.
- Why is my state not here?
- Because no hotel in it has been read yet. The dataset grows city by city, and a state appears the moment one of its cities does — never with an estimate standing in for the reading.
